MONSTERS by Gareth Edwards
April 15, 2011

You would be led to believe that Monsters is a high budget, Hollywood produced big production. The fact is that Monsters is directed by BBC visual effects artist and indie film maker Gareth Edwards.

Gareth was on the film course at Farnham at the same time I was studying animation. His graduation film, which blended animation in the vain of Jurassic Park, was made in conjunction with fellow classmate and CG animator Andy Howell.

Gareth knew the general plot of the film and the direction he wanted the characters to take but didn’t know how the story would evolve exactly.

He used a combination of 3DS Max and ZBrush to produce the effects and utilised the Adobe Creative Suite to comp and edit shots. Producing a shot every 2 days on his own proved to be no mean feat, especially the fantastic special effects heavy conclusion to the film.

The truth is, the credits will roll and they will read ‘Gareth Edwards’.

Character Animation Reel Alexis Wanneroy
November 7, 2010

Alexis Wanneroy contacted me asking if I would post his showreel. How could I refuse!

Alexis is a character animator at Dreamworks and has been lucky enough to work there for 5 years producing animation for How To Train Your Dragon, Kung Fu Panda, Bee Movie and Flushed Away.

He started working in the industry on Valiant after graduating from the Gobelins School in France, with his film Human Nature. I saw the short back in 2003 and remember really liking the style of both the quirky characters and the snappy animation.

Animating For DISTRICT 9 by Robert Kuczera
March 9, 2010

Senior Animator Robert Kuczera has just sent me an e-mail asking if I would post a link to an interview with CG Heute entitled Robert Kuczera – Animieren Fur District 9 detailing the work he did on District 9 while at The Embassy in Vancouver. The interview was originally written in German so the Google translation is a little ropey in places although it is easy to follow.

Robert’s extensive body of work, which can be seen on his website includes animation for adverts and films such as Comfort Creme and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban while working at various effects studios including The Mill and Framestore CFC. He is also known for his 9 minute short CGI film Dragon Slayer
