Pixar updates their FREE* RenderMan software to version 20.
New features include: Denoiser for cleaning up noisy low sample renders, producing quicker render times. Originally developed at Disney. Visualizer Integrator to visualise how Renderman sees the scene. Provides fast feedback for pre visualising depth of field and motion blur. Marschner Hair Pixar’s in-house hair system. Produces Monsters Inc. quality fur. Physical Camera to simulate imperfections of real world cameras such as distortion and chromatic aberration.
Pixar’s announcement is set to shake up the rendering world with it’s free* (yes FREE!*) release of their award winning RenderMan software.
RenderMan for Maya is due for release during Siggraph 2014 in Vancouver 10th – 14th August. Edit: early 2015 due to high demand.

HYPERSPACE MADNESS is a game created by Autodesk over a 2 month timeframe using the Unreal UDK game engine to demonstrate what their software is capable of.
A short film directed by Remi McGill is currently in production to demonstrate how Autodesk is used in film production.

ParaNorman fuses CG modeling in Maya and physical model making to produce character faces, using a new technique called Powder Printing. The process for Replacement Animation is a progression of 3D Printing or Rapid Prototyping (see Coraline article) and is now so advanced that even the smallest detail can be reproduced and the surfaces coloured.
