You would be led to believe that Monsters is a high budget, Hollywood produced big production. The fact is that Monsters is directed by BBC visual effects artist and indie film maker Gareth Edwards.
Gareth was on the film course at Farnham at the same time I was studying animation. His graduation film, which blended animation in the vain of Jurassic Park, was made in conjunction with fellow classmate and CG animator Andy Howell.
Gareth knew the general plot of the film and the direction he wanted the characters to take but didn’t know how the story would evolve exactly.
He used a combination of 3DS Max and ZBrush to produce the effects and utilised the Adobe Creative Suite to comp and edit shots. Producing a shot every 2 days on his own proved to be no mean feat, especially the fantastic special effects heavy conclusion to the film.
The truth is, the credits will roll and they will read ‘Gareth Edwards’.
